Tenant move-in to do list
Once you move into your new rental, you may wish to just settle in and get comfy but before you can they're a few things in which you should do to allow your tenancy in that property to run as smoothly as possible. This blog is going to conclude the 7 most important steps in which you as a tenant must follow.
Step One- Water supply
It is essential that you inform your water company of your move-in date in order to update your bill and transfer your accounts to your new property. This stops you from becoming liable for any additional charges. As you make your supplier aware of the date, this is the time to also send them your meter readings.
Step two- Gas company
Similar to your water supply, you will need to shine light on your moving situation to your Gas company, again to ensure that you are not liable to any additional charges, as you do this you will also need to provide them with the meter readings.
In addition to this, we highly recommend that you ask them what your unit charge is, as this will allow you to compare the cost with other local suppliers to ensure that you are getting the best tariff. It is in your best interest to complete this step as soon as you move in, especially if you have a pay as you go meter, as this will remove any debt from the previous tenant.
Step three- Electric company
Again, you will need to inform them of your move-in date, they may require you email them a copy of your tenancy agreement and provide them with your meter readings.
If your new rental is an electric only property than you should check that you have an economy 7 meter, this meter in which will have two rates on, night rate being cheaper and day rate being more expensive. You will need to check the prices of each rate and what time them start. This provides you with time stamps in which your electricity is at its cheapest rate, allowing you to utilise these hours, saving you a significant amount of money.
Step four- Council tax
Simply for this step you are only required to inform the council tax department of your move-in date.
Step Five - TV license
Inform your TV license f your move in date.
Step Six- Bank accounts
You will also need to notify your banks of your moving.
Step seven- DVLA
Notify DVLA of change of address for your car log book and tax purposes, as well as car insurance, as in the case of an accident this could cause issues.
In addition, we would highly recommend you change your address on your diving licence as it is an offence to drive with an incorrect address on your driving licence.
With each of theses steps completed, you will have no stress with additional charges linked to any previous tenants, allowing you to have a stress free tenancy. Although these steps seem quite daunting, they can be easily sorted online, in a matter of minutes.
