LEGAL DISPOSAL OF BULKY WASTE

14/11/2023

When you own or rent your home, or are moving house, there will always be occasions when you need to dispose of something that won’t fit in your regular domestic bin – what is known as “bulky waste”.

Leaving these large items in your rented property when you vacate, or leaving such bulky items on the street (fly tipping) can result in charges being applied to your rental account for the removal of such items, or that cost being deducted from your deposit.

In times like today where finances are difficult for most, having monies deducted from your deposit, or charges added to your account for the removal of such goods is not ideal.

Whether it's an outdated refrigerator, a recently replaced sagging sofa, or undesired things from a house move, what should you do with that kind of waste?

LEGAL DISPOSAL OF BULKY WASTE

Local authorities across the UK nations operate what are known as Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), which you can visit during normal opening times to dispose of bulky household waste free of charge. Fortunately for us, we have one in here in Thanet:

MARGATE HOUSHOLD WASTE RECYCLING CENTRE

Manston Road,
Margate,
CT9 4LX

OPENING HOURS

  • Monday to Saturday: 8am to 4:30pm
  • Sunday and Bank Holidays: 9am to 4pm

LEGAL COLLECTION OF BULKY WASTE

Alternatively, the good news is that Thanet District Council offer a chargeable collection service to collect large items from outside your home – you just need to book an appointment via the council website, and pay the required fee.

Charges tend to be tiered depending on the size and bulk of the item, so we here at Regency Properties have made things easier by drawing up a fee table (below) to put everything in one place.

LETS REDUCE FLY TIPPING IN THANET

One of the reasons why local authorities must make it easy and affordable to dispose of clean bulky waste – and why disposal businesses have to have an appropriate licence – is to prevent the blight of fly-tipping.

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of household or trade waste – and it’s a real problem in the UK, despite the widespread availability of legal and convenient disposal options that we have described.

So, depending on what you have to dispose of, Thanet District Council could be an easy and affordable solution of disposing of such large and bulky items, and in turn you are helping to do your bit for the environment by keeping as much as possible off of the streets of Thanet.
